Analyse why The Big Issue magazine has used an intertextual approach on its front cover. You must analyse the use of intertextuality to create meaning in the source. Make judgements and reach a conclusion about the advantages of this use of intertextuality to The Big Issue magazine.
Critical of education in the Uk
Wants it to reform
Intro- what is the big issue
Main body- Harry Potter
The Big Issue is a magazine sold to homeless people so that they too can sell it and make some profit for themselves.Vendors buy product £1.25 each and sell for £2.50. The education magazine front cover is a criticism on the main education system.
The use of intertextuality helps audiences gain an understanding that The Big Issue believes that the education system doesn't allow children to be creative and imaginative individuals. The Harry Potter characters on the front cover promotes an education of more imagination, liberty and creativity. Children are instead educated to know set curriculums well and if they do not know them well or have some sort of difficulty which they cannot help they will fail through the presence of Ozzy Osbourne on the front cover. It is like they are manufactured, they are all taught the exact same thing and are made to recall the exact same thing in exams, we learn this through the Pink Floyd reference.
In Harry Potter, students are to make spells and are therefore more creative. It shows that there is more to education than just facts and figures. Children should be able to do what they do best and that is to be imaginative rather than all mad to learn and do the same thing as if they are robots programmed by the higher education systems, interlinking with Pink Floyd as it is said in their song 'The Wall' 'We don't need no thought control.'` Children should be liberal in the classroom and independent, the 'teachers should leave us alone.' Education is an institution put up to control the minds of the young so they can carry what they have learnt into adulthood and the rest of their life, as pink floyd believed. The Big Issue cover is therefore bound to be a controversial topic as generally, in today's society, education is seen as the way to be successful in life and without it, success has a major cap on it. The education system is made to be on our side and not against us as mainstream society would believe, but instead this cover claims that those who work in the education system are preventing imagination and only teaching us what they want us to know. Students are to follow a set curriculum and the same curriculum as each other, children are now manufactured.
Ozzy Osbourne is one who was failed by the education system because of his dyslexia, teachers didn't believe in him. Dyslexia was yet to be a diagnosis so he was just labelled as a dumb and unable kid. Because of these harsh actions towards him as a child he wasn't getting the support he needed and ended up being a failure and succumbing to huge amounts of mental stress such as depression. Here is an example of when the education system has gone against somebody and have turned them into a very poor version of themselves. Because of education, Osbourne submerged into drug abuse and addiction. Big Issue is highlighting the issues education brings with people's self confidence. It imposes on you whether you are goo enough to make it in life from the age of a child, Osbourne is the epitome.

big issue hwk,
HOW DOES THE COVER USE MEDIA LANGUAGE TO CONSTRUCT AN ALTERNATIVE REPRESENTATION OF AN EVENT
It uses images of diverse vendors whom are homeless to create a sense of familiarity and reality to the audience. The magazine feels very close at home when the vendors are on the magazine. The shape of a tie hints professionalism and ethical capitalism. The vendors aren't just homeless beggars but are homeless people trying to strive and work to survive. This makes audiences look at the homeless as hardworking and trying to get themselves out of the tragic situation they are in rather than just accepting it. The title is WE ARE HERE initiating that the magazine is widely accesible. It is in bold in the middle drawing our attention to the masthead. It is written in red to coordinate with the vendors uniform. It is in yellow to parralel the tag line. The white makes the BIG ISSUE title stand out so viewers are reminded of the name of the magazine.

Fandom Henry Jenkins Audience Theory
Interested in the online world- Media 2.0
His book 1992; Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture
Media 2.0- refers to the way Media has changed into a new way of engagement. Internet has progressed, more stuff can be used on the net.
Web 2.0 is the current state of the web, the new version in comparison to what it used to be
It now considers how the web allows for greater user interactivity and collaboration.
Poaching- taking something from something.
His book showed how fans construct their own culture by appropriating and remixing 'poaching' content from mass culture.
Through this 'poaching' the fans carried out such creative cultural activities as rethink personal identity issues such as gender and sexuality; writing stories to shift focus onto a media 'story world secondary characters; producing content to expand the timelines of a story world; or filling in missing scenes in the story world's official narratives order to better satisfy the fan community.
Textual poachers speaks about the internet allowing more interactivity and engagement has allowed users to engage with people who are fans of the same thing as them. They create their own version of their favoured piece of media online eg; a youtube video.
Hypodermic needle theory- absorbing information without question
Jenkins interactive audience approach
He belongs to a group of media thinkers
They view the media, and web 2.0 as empowering to the audience, breaking down traditional boundaries of class and status
The audience is interactive and powerful
They can participate and create their own narratives, questioning messages and generating their own ideas.
Once upon a time only publishers had a say on the internet- you couldn't share your views. You accepted what was there in silence.
Participatory culture
New media has accelerated to 'participatory culture' in which audiences are active and creative participants rather than passive consumers.
They create online communities, produce new creative forms, collaborate to solve problems, and shape the flow of media. This generates what Jenkins describes as collective intelligence.'
FANDOM- refers to social structures and cultural practices created by the most passionately engaged consumers of mass media properties
PARTICIPATORY CULTURE- refers more broadly to any kind of cultural production which starts at the grassroots level and which is open to broad participation.
WEB 2.0- is a business model that sustains many web-based projects that rely on principles such as creation and moderation, social networking and crowdsourcing
Media effects theory
Hypodermic needle theory- absorbing information without question
Moral panic- the feeling that the situation is out of control in some way, and therefore represents a threat to a moral order eg; widespread media coverage.
Cultivation theory-Roles of the media- media doesn't simply inject us, but cultivates particular beliefs/attitudes over time.
How does fandom work
Growth of mass media, groups of people no matter distance interact through social interests
Fans- faithful consumers but also want to communicate with other fans
Fans- strongest critics
Fans- positive engagement want things to be done well.
Poaching minecraft
Minecraft youtubers
Minecraft communities
Minecraft summer camps- learn skills for codings
Minecon (conventions) fans meet
Participatory but slightly less poachy/active
Merchandise- books, clothing, bags, toys
Synergy and minecraft film trailers
Transmedia learning
Story telling technique. It is the system of messages that reveal a narrative or egender an experience through multiple media platforms emotionally connecting them with learners by involving them personally.

effects theory and reception theory
Effects theory & hypodermic needle
Roles of the media- the media are powerful negative forces who control the masses.
Effect on audience-Media is seen as a hypodermic needle, injecting our helpless minds with messages which we take on board fully.
Examples- children watched violence towards a bobo doll on tv and they replicated this behaviour.
Moral panic theory
Roles of the media-violent/extremist idea published in media.
Effects on audience-they become outraged, fearful and upset by the challenges and menaces posed to their accepted values and ways of life, by the activities of groups defined as deviant.
Example- eg; ebola on the news everyone was worried.
Cultivation theory
Roles of the media- media doesn't simply inject us, but cultivates particular beliefs/attitudes over time.
Effects on the audience-Heavy viewers are exposed to more violence and therefore are affected by the mean world syndrome.
Stuart Hall Reception Theory. - believes media reflects dominant ideologies which reinforce general agreed ideas. The encoding of a message is the production of the message. The decoding of a message is how an audience member is able to understand, and interpret the message.
Preferred- what media wants to portray
Negotiated- debating what media wants to portray
Oppositional- disagreeing with given topic
Polysemic- different meanings. Media covers different meanings.

film industry esq
The methods of production, distribution, and exhibition
Production is how you make the film, what you need in order to make it, you need personnel, crew, a cast, the money to make a film, how they get that money and what they spend it on like stars, story, effects and cast.
Distribution is the way that the film is put out there in terms of promotion and advertising, and how it's sold around the world and the big studios get an audience to come to the cinema and also consume the film in other ways
Exhibition is when the film is in the cinema, and life beyond the cinema, such as how the film can be consumed after the cinema like home viewing, VOD (video on demand), SVOD (Subscription Video on demand(Netflix, Amazon prime))
The conglomerates are the big companies that own smaller companies, The Big 6. This is the ownership within the film industry.
New technology used within the film industry is for viral marketing, via social media, such as youtube.
Explain the differences in production, distribution and exhibition between Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs and Black Panther (15 marks) (25 mins)
-2 and a half pages, when written by hand
STRUCTURE
-Intro- define key terms, explain case studies- indicate key differences (3 mins// 1/4 of a page?)
-Main body 1- Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs background in production, distribution, exhibition (7 mins) (3/4 of a page?)
-Main body 2- Black Panther detailed examples (10 mins, comparison) (1 page?)
-Conclusion- Bring together and answer question (what main differences and similarities? Future question?) (5 mins, 1/2 a page?)
Disney teamed up with the RKO to distribute SWATSD asa they were not a distributing company back then, they risked everything, only exhibited in cinemas, lots of people went to watch it, and it was re-released about every 5 years as there were no home-video technology. Dubbed into, and animated, text on screen in different languages for wider audience.
Marvel, a disney company, produced the film. Live action rather than an animate, hand drawn, cartoon. Youtubers that promoted the film, teaser ads, linking up with BuzzFeed, VICE and Vox, using technology to their advantage. Exhibited in cinemas, very popular, not as popular as snow white and the seven dwarfs, the film will be released on Blu-Ray, SVOD, VOD, etc.
The main difference is the use of technology, the main similarity is that they're releasing the films globally, including licensed products, merch.

minecraft halfterm work
1- Cross platforming-this means that you’ll be able to play Minecraft on your PC with a friend playing on an Xbox, while your buddy joins in from their Android phone.
2- Better together update is so exciting as Microsoft is calling this the first time a game has offered cross-play across all these platforms, and with the addition of the Nintendo Switch to the mix, Minecraft could be one of the first true platform-agnostic titles, which is an incredible thing. (can run on any device).

3- There might be concerns about child protection as children can interact with anybody and everybody who has the game through cross-platforming which can introduce serial problems like grooming or cyber-bullying

4- Cross-platform gaming can only get bigger. As the game is now available on all devices(except sony) there will be more sales as more people have a compatible device. It also is exciting as anybody can play with whoever they wish regardless of what devices they both have. Pro- encourages more sales. Cons- can cause addiction to games which comes with health risks

BLACK PANTHER CASE STUDY
Black panther is out on Feb 16th (Previews 12th) you will study its production and marketing in a case study (approx 1000 words) on your blog.
Cover:
Production Companies
Marvel studios a subsidiary of the conglomerate Walt Disney
Casting- Who? Why? How much? What might it have been spent on?
Lupita Nyong'o. Michael B Jordan. Well known, credibility
Marketing Campaign- Tv? Outdoor? Using social media for viral marketing?

Brand Partnerships
Role of conglomerate in success (How Disney can use other assets to help)
Black Panther's production company is Marvel Studios- which is a subsidiary under the conglomerate The Walt Disney Company. The movie is deemed to be successful because it is produced under one of the worlds biggest character based entertainment companies.
Key characters in the movie consist of Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Daniel Kaluuya.
Daniel Kaluuya is a new success in the film industry in which he first gained international recognition after his starring in the horror film Get Out in 2017. Because of his recent success he is a new, fresh face who everyone is familiar with so he gives Black Panther a modern, current look to it. The movie therefore comes across as more appealing due to one of its credible stars, Kaluuya.
Lupita Nyong'o rose as a star when she was feautured in the film 12 Years a Slave in 2013. This too like Black Panther is wholly a black based movie and therefore she is now known for starring in black movies and being a very prominent black actress, something that the filming industry lacks.
Michael B Jordan is credible as he has been in the acting industry for a very long time - starting with the movie Black and White (1999) so he most definitely is sure of what he is doing as his great acting has come through experience.
Black Panther's budget was $200 million dollar which was largely spent on the set and casting. The Kingdom of Wakanda, where the superhero lead of Black Panther makes his home is a utopia. Dispensed in rich colours and African tradition, the fictional country is wealthy beyond measure, thanks to a supply of major Marvel mineral Vibranium, and has used its resources and technological advancements to craft spaceships, superconductors and skyscrapers as tall as your dreams. Due to the many credible and well-known cast members, the price for casting would have come to a substantial amount.
Black Panther relied on grass root events for marketing. When SuCh Charles, a singer from Denver saw the Black Panther trailer she was touched to organise an event which brought Denver's black community together. The screening she organised was just 1 of a 100 grass root events organised by black filmgoers for the opening of the historic film. New York recently created the #BlackPantherChallenge with the aim of raising $10,000 through a GoFundMe Page to benefit the boys and girls club of harlem. Within days, the goal had been surpassed raising more than $40,000 to send 200 kids to see the movie. There now have been over 200 campaigns to raise money for underprivileged black kids to watch the black dominated movie in theatres so that black culture can be celebrated and applauded in a way that is rarely seen.
Black Panther licensed products are to be released by companies such as Hasbro, LEGO, Funko and many more. There's also been a new comic book written by the author Ta-Nehisi Coates and was released April 6, and the superhero made its first cinematic debut in the film Captain America: Civil War which hit cinemas in May. This also acts as a form of advertising for the movie.
Marvel studios are unveiling a partnership with Lexus on its Black Panther with the automakers 2018 Lexus LC being featured in the film. The two companies kicked off the partnership with an invite-only party at San Diego Comic-Con with a performance from DJ Lulo Cafe. As you can see it can be called a 'partnership extravaganza.'
Because of Disney's authoritative and professional status, it is an asset to Black Panther and has contributed to a lot of its credibility.

Q1; Autistic children are attracted to minecraft because of the logic structure it consists and its sheer simplicity
Q2;Minecraft educational features are agriculture, geography and physics, as the visuals are very simple it may be tedious for more able students but autistic children may gain pleasure from it.
Q3; Copycat versions didn't take off like minecraft so were less popular in sales, they wer very open ended with no guidance and didn't tell anybody what to build.
Q4; Modding community-those who create new altered versions of minecraft
Q5; Minecraft collaborated with merchandise companies such as LEGO.
